About the Tenuta Gorghi Tondi Winery
The Gorghi Tondi estate would have never been born without Great-grandmother Dora. Her great-granddaughters, Annamaria and Clara Sala are the fourth generation to join the family business. Like their predecessors, the Sala sisters produce quality wine in balance with nature.
In 2000 their father, Michele, decided to start his own company. Together with his two daughters, they started Gorghi Tondi. The name “Gorghi” refers to the whirlpools found in area lakes. The estate is a natural oasis, protected by the WWF since 1998. The area contains a treasure trove of migratory birds, rare aquatic species, and flora.
The vineyards stretch for 130 hectares over two properties. The vineyards are on flat land near the four small lakes of the Nature Reserve. Lakes Preola and Gorghi Tondi are inside a karst depression. Karst topography forms soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum dissolve. Karst areas often contain underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. The lakes formed as rains eroded the surrounding area. This unique environment is also influenced by the nearby sea.
This environment is well suited to sustainable viticulture. The cellar resides inside a traditional “Baglio” (a Sicilian, walled country estate.) The Gorghi Tondi estate is in perfect harmony with the surrounding natural environment. In keeping with this harmony, the winery uses organic farming practices and traditional vinification methods.
