ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Somos Naranjito Verdelho is an orange wine from 100% Biodynamically farmed Verdelho. The small vineyard is in McLaren Flat. The winemakers destem the grapes and ferment them on their skins. Half of the grapes macerate in stainless steel tanks for a huge six months before pressing. At the same time, the other half are pressed into neutral oak barrels. The barrals are then lees stirred for 14 days to build texture. The resulting wine is vibrant, unfined and unfiltered. It is wild, gingery, and exotic. Somos Naranjito Verdelho has so much personality, so much drinkability, so much value. A superb offering from this great small McLaren Vale operation.

About the Winemaker

Somos means “we are” in Spanish. The ‘we’ is a Australian Ben Caldwell and Mexican Marco Ruiz Cantú. It all began in 2010 during Cantú’s oenology and viticulture studies at the University of Adelaide. After graduation, he returned to Mexico with a small shipment of Barossa Shiraz. A wine he made for fun. He named it Juguette, a Spanish word for toy. His mostly sold to friends and family but he also sold a bit via distribution. The sales from Jugette helped fund his trip home.

Friends and family received the wine with great enthusiam. So, Cantú reached out to his friend from uni, Ben. Cantú spent most of the year in Mexico establishing a distribution network. In the meantime, Ben was back in McLaren Vale tending the vines. In less than five vintages Juguette grew from 150 cases to 15,000 cases. It was time for a new project. Inspired by the food Mauricio ate back home in Baja California. They wanted to create a wine that complemented the fresh, bright, textures they found in the food of Baja California.

In 2015 they began ‘Somos’. This project focuses on alternative varieties and natural winemaking techiques. The wines burst with energy, precision, and personality. Somos is deeply rooted in South Australia but with a bit of Latin flair.
