About Somlói Vándor
After receiving his winemaking diploma in Eger, Tamás Kis acquired a tiny property in the Hungarian wine region of Somló in 2010. It was here that he began his love affair with the magical hill. For years he worked for large prestigious wineries in Eger but would still travel several times a week to his winery on Somló, and this was the inspiration for his winery name — Somlói Vándor, or the “Somlói Wanderer.” Today he continues to live up to his name, regularly traveling between his winery in Somló and his wife Dorottya’s winery, Bussay Pince, in Zala.
Somló is Hungary’s smallest wine appellation, famous for its volcanic soils and the rich, fiery wines that are made there. It was long believed that the wines of Somló had special medicinal properties. Today Tamás makes organic wines from his small estate, comprised of vines that range between 8 and 50+ years old. The soil is black basalt-rich loess with clay and sand.
