About Quinta do Romeu Moinho do Gato

The Quinta do Romeu Moinho do Gato is the Menéres family’s freshest example of their Douro reds. The winemaker only uses organic, handpicked grapes in Quinta do Romeu Moinho do Gato. It is predominately Tinta Barroca. It also contains a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Sousão. The grapes come into the cellar for manual selection and sorting. Next, the stalks are completely removed. After destemming the grapes they are gently crushed. Then begins the slow, natural yeast fermentation inside giant barrels. Finally, a vertical press crushed the grapes again. About 10% of the whole clusters remain whole during fermentation. No fining and a very rough filtering take place.
The finished Quinta do Romeu Moinho do Gato is expressive and delightful. Tasters will notice ripe red fruits and spice on the nose. Followed by a beautiful smooth yet vibrant wine on the palate. The red fruit flavors shine through this wine. The wine also has well-integrated tannins, fresh acidity, and playfulness. It adds up to a wine with a beautifully balanced finish.

About the Producer

In 1874, Clemente Guimarães Menéres had a vision. He wanted to produce Portugal’s greatest wines and olive oil. So he founded Qunita do Romeu as the family business. These days, the family resides in the district of Bragança (in the northeast side of Portugal). They have a beautiful estate that sits in the far northeast of the Douro wine region.
Quinta do Romeu maintains a steadfast commitment to harmony. They strive to maintain a balance between their crops, the environment, and their people. In 1997, their entire production received organic certification. Today they go a step further. They biodynamically farm part of their grapes and olives groves.
Once their grapes enter the winemaking process the attention to detail continues. Quinta Romeu uses zero additives in their wines including the Quinta do Romeu Moinho do Gato. They also use minimal sulfur and avoid all international varieties. They focus on the local indigenous grapes. Touriga Nacional grown in this area is intense and floral because of the unique shale soils.
