ABOUT THE PRODUCER
About the Wine
MicroBio Kilometro 0 Verdejo is a tannic and powerful orange wine. Ismael Gozalo is known as the “Wizard of Verdejo.” Creamy and lush, with spicy dried fruit notes.
About the Winemaker
Welcome to the República Independiente del Verdejo under President Ismael Gozalo. Many know him for his work at Ossian, one of the more respectable houses in Rueda. He was the winegrower and maker since founding it in 2004. Ismael’s family owns some of the oldest ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines in Rueda. Characterized by sandy soils, these head-trained vines have never seen any chemicals. To this day Ossian remains one of the few organic producers in Rueda. Ismael has never bought into the region’s modern and manipulative techniques. Today, Ossian continues to make some of the more interesting wines under the Pago de Carraovejas designation.
Now, Ismael has taken his family’s most prized vineyards with him to start MicroBio. Some of our favorite wines from Ismael range in a variety of styles. The super-fizzy Microbio Circustancial Pét-Nat. The Kilometro 0 Verdejo is a skin contact beauty. The MicroBio MicroBio Verdejo spends a year under flor for added richness. And there are so many others to come.
About the Winery
MicroBio was actually founded by Ismael in 1998 before Ossian even existed. It wasn’t until he left that we were able to use his heart and soul in his solo project. Coined by some as “El Mago de las Verdejos”, Ismael practices his sorcery in a medieval underground cellar located in his native town of Nieva. Barrels, foudres, and amphoras. Damejeannes and stainless tanks. Young, old, skin contact, sparkling, biological and oxidative aging…you name it, he’s got it. If you have the opportunity to taste in his cellar, expect a helluva ride. As soon as you think you’ve seen it all, he somehow finds a way to exceed your expectations. You will wonder how Verdejo picked so ripe can still preserve such freshness and acidity. This something only Ismael can tell.
