Montepulciano is a red wine grape grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche, and Molise regions. However, it is not planted in Montepulciano in southern Tuscany. The variety is used mainly to produce dry red wines. A notable exception can be found in the lighter, cherry-colored Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo.
Montepulciano wines are globally appreciated for their soft flavors and strong color pigments. Gentle tannins and a low acidity create a medium-bodied wine that is typically best consumed soon after bottling. Although, the variety also responds well to judicious use of oak to create a richer, age-worthy style of wine. The deep purple juice is used in varying proportions under roughly 30 of Italy’s DOC and DOCG titles.
Montepulciano responds well to blending with other varieties. The most successful by far is Sangiovese, its close relative, and Italy’s most widely planted grape variety. For more information please see Montepulciano – Sangiovese. At the turn of the new century, Montepulciano was Italy’s second most planted red wine variety, marginally ahead of Barbera. Its popularity is to both the approachable style of the wines it produces and the reliably high yields in the vineyard. The variety ripens relatively late and offers good resistance to mildew diseases. The variety shares phenotypic characteristics with Pugnitello and it was previously thought that they were the same variety. However, DNA profiling has proven that they are different.
