About Lusu Cellars

The origin of the winery’s name comes from the legend of Lusus. Lusus brought vines and winemaking to the Iberian peninsula. He was a companion of Bacchus the Roman god of wine. His voyages to the mountains, valleys, and coasts of Portugal are legend. Lusus began many of the now centuries-old enological traditions of Portugal. This still carries a rich history in the region. The different soils and climates created connections between the people and the vines. There is a connection between the past generations and the current ones. The older generations brought their knowledge, embedded in tradition, to a new land in California. The new generations have taken those traditions further. Thus they renewed the cycle Lusus created.

About David Teixeira, the Winemaker

Growing up making wine on California’s delta, David learned how things worked in the old country. He learned along the way the process and craft of winemaking. After harvesting grapes, his parents and uncles would get together to make plans. Here they decided what to do and when to do it. Each year the fruit came back to the crusher and press. Here elbow grease and Portuguese ingenuity ruled. David’s father was the gatekeeper of traditions. He watched the time of year and lunar position. He used these to schedule the best times for one winemaking task or another.

Now, in his own wine, David uses what he learned working for wineries up and down California’s coast. He combines the wisdom in each tradition’s core connected with each site to create wines that are truly Californian. The wines show a sense of place and time for each of their unique provenances. The deep connection between where a vine is grown and the wine it produces is at the center of his craft.

The core of David’s mission is just what Lusus started. Listen to what the land is saying and build traditions around that. Listen to make sure what is said in the land is upheld in the cellar.
