About Lusu Cellars Carignan
Lusu Cellars Carignan is a delicious, earthy, and red-berried beauty. Dry-farmed in Costa Contra. Cranberry, black cherry, earthy spice, and sage aromas and flavors.
The origin of the winery’s name takes inspiration from the legend of Lusus. The legend says Lusus brought vines and winemaking to the Iberian peninsula. He was also a companion of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. He voyaged to the mountains, valleys, and coasts of Portugal. Here, he began many of the now centuries-old enological traditions. These traditions carry a rich history in the region. Each region of Portugal has different soils and climates. Thus, the legend established unique connections between the people and the vines. Portuguese immigrants brought their knowledge and tradition to a new land in California. Here, they renewed the cycle Lusus created.
About David Teixeira, the Winemaker
Growing up making wine on California’s delta, David learned the Portuguese traditions. He learned from elders about the process and craft of winemaking. As he toured the vineyards and talked to the farmers, he would help to pick the grapes. David’s parents and uncles would get together to make plans for the harvest, deciding what to do and when to do it. Each year, the fruit picked came back to their crusher and press. Here, winemaking saw elbow grease and Portuguese ingenuity ruled. David’s father was the gatekeeper of traditions. Here, he followed biodynamic practices. He scheduled the best times for the different winemaking tasks.
Now, David’s wines use what he learned working for other wineries. He combines the wisdom in each tradition’s core connected with each site. With this in mind, he creates wines that are Californian through and through. The wines show a sense of place and time for each of their unique provenances. The deep connection between where a vine is grown and the wine it produces is at the center of David’s craft.
The core of David’s mission is just what Lusus started. To find what the land is saying and build traditions around that. Therefore, listening to what is said in the land is upheld in the cellar.
