ABOUT THE PRODUCER
About Il Farneto Spergle Orange Wine
Il Farneto Spergle Orange Wine is a refreshing wine made from the Spergola variety, which dates back to the 15th century. Slight skin contact gives the wine depth and a touch of sour bitterness. On the palate, there are notes of lemon skin, quince, wildflower honey, and peach.
About Il Farneto
During the ’90s M. Bertoni founded Il Farneto, a naturally cultivated vineyard. The founder’s intent was to contribute to sustainable agriculture initiatives, producing grapes while respecting the environment. Our 34 hectares of land, 8 of which are vineyards, are located between the hills of Scandiano and Canossa. Even though Farneto fields are relatively close to the residential area of Castellarano and Sassuolo, thanks to their elevation they preserve particularly isolated positions. This upland despite its relatively close position to a heavily residential and industrial area of the towns of Castellarano and Sassuolo, still preserves a particularly isolated position, because of its geomorphological land features. In addition, the territory presents a wide variety of biodiversity thanks to its favorable microclimate temperatures. Farneto fields naturally lend themselves to biodynamic agriculture. The quality of Farneto grapes perfectly suits an organic vinification process.
About Spergola
Spergola is a little-known white wine variety used in the wines of the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, specifically the Colli Scandiano DOC. It is often called Spergola Alata meaning “Winged Spergola”, because its main grape bunches nearly always have a wing-like secondary bunch above them.
Spergola has been used in the hills around Reggio Nell’Emilia for many hundreds of years, although plantings of the variety are now very low, being displaced by more popular white wine varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. With only Scandiano as a base, there is a limited chance the variety will find a niche elsewhere in the world.
It was previously thought that Spergola and Vernaccia di Oristano were two separate varieties but recent DNA profiling has proved that they are the same.
