About Vinyes Tortuga
Dido & Jurriaan are a Dutch couple who share many passions but most importantly, they both love wine. They’ve traveled across the world making wine ultimately settling in the Alt-Empordà region of Spain, where through a crowdfunding campaign they bought 10 hectares of planted vines in the natural reserve of Albera. They live amidst their vines where their home and winery are completely self-sufficient using solar power and drawing water from their well.
They’re currently farming Garnacha, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tannat and Barbera. All of their work in the vineyard is done organically while their wines are made without additives in the cellar. 2018 marked the first vintage making wine from their own grapes focusing on restoring the vineyards, converting them to biodynamics, and grafting to other (white) varieties.
They’ve worked for big industrial companies as well as for small boutique wineries but it was their time with Joan Ramon Escoda that really changed their approach to winemaking and introduced them to the world of natural wine. There they learned that in order to make good natural wine, they learned that the focus needed to be on the vineyard, working as naturally as possible to produce high-quality grapes.
The names of the wines derive from album titles or songs that they often listen to.
