About Domaine Montessuit Ayze

Montessuit is just the second and only other producer from Ayze to be imported to the US. This is a fairly new winery, starting in 2011. Montessuit works exclusively with Gringet. In the 1980s, 80 hectares were planted to Gringet in Ayze. Gringet is only planted in Ayze and nowhere else. Then 20 years ago it was down to 50 hectares and today it is only 20 hectares. Belluard owns about half of these vines.

Fabrice and Nicolas Montessuit are following in Dominique Bellaurd’s footsteps and working exclusively with this cult-favorite grape. All work is done in stainless steel.

About Gringet

Gringet is a white wine grape from the mountainous Savoie region of eastern France. It was long thought to be a clone of Savagnin Blanc and is sometimes mistaken for Roussanne (both of these are commonly found in Savoie vineyards), but DNA testing has confirmed it is a distinct variety in its own right.

Wines made from Gringet tend to be floral-scented and relatively delicate. Their aromas are redolent of both apple blossom and fruit, which complements their tart acidity well. Overall, they give a good sense of place, particularly as they are produced almost exclusively in the mountains of Savoie and fit in well with the traditional Savoyard wine style. However, very few plantings of Gringet exist. Most are to be found in the much-prized vineyards of Ayze (a Savoie cru), where they are treasured by a handful of growers
