The FUSO Project

FUSO is a long-term project for importer PortoVino. The goal of the project is to bring in authentic, local wines from each of the 20 regions of Italy. The project focuses on wines from real growers rather than from tank farms. Farmers and producer friends committed to organic viticulture, and low-intervention, and terroir-driven wines. As a result, they got some cool stuff. The first of which is the Fuso Barbera from Walter Massa in the Colli Tortonesi in Piemonte.
FUSO requirements:
  • Delicious and terroir-driven
  • Made by farmers (not tank-farms)
  • Certified organic or practicing organic wineries in conversion
  • Native grapes
  • Native yeasts
  • Low sulphur (45 mg/l or less of added SO2)
  • Unfiltered or slightly filtered
  • Dry farmed

Meet Denny Bini

For far too many years, Emilia has been an industrially-produced mediocrity. But, it is now home to a small but growing cell of artisanal producers. They are farming with care. They are also returning to the metodo ancestrale style of their great-grandfathers. Denny Bini is one of the humble heroes of this renaissance-revolution. He has slowly been changing his career. First, he was a historic cellar master of a well-known Lambrusco estate. Now, he is someone with his own vineyards and cellar of metodo ancestrale wines.

Denny makes a Lambrusco we love, Spuma. This is his bottle-fermented metodo ancestral made from the geeky high-acid Sorbara grape. It is an everyday drinking sparkling red Lambrusco from Emilia. A party wine. A pool pounder. Ready for a raucous meal. It’s delicious, a touch bitter, and goes down easy if you don’t overthink it (kinda like most family gatherings).

Denny’s a good person to visit. He’ll tell you about all the under-the-radar trattoria and agrotourism in the area. Look out for his bianco metodo ancestrale that’s he’s been planting vines of the last few years.
