About Weingut Daniel Schweizer
The Schweizer winery is located in Schwaigern, Württemberg, east of Heilbronn. In the gentle, hilly landscape around the village, the vines grow on gypsum keuper and sandstone soils. In addition to Riesling and Pinot Gris, mainly red wine is grown here. In addition to the Lemberger, which sets the tone, there is also the local variety Samtrot, a natural mutation of the Pinot Meuniers that was discovered in the 1920s in a vineyard near Heilbronn.
Daniel Schweizer cultivates around 3 hectares of vineyards. He is already working on these according to biodynamic principles. He dispenses with artificial aids, be it in the vineyard or in the wine cellar. Daniel always emphasizes that he trusts nature and works with all of its occurrences.
In more than half of the vineyards, only horses are used to till the soil. The aim is to soon be able to cultivate all of the winery’s vineyards exclusively with horses and thus completely dispense with the use of machines in the vineyard. The Black Forest Willi is currently working “full-time” on the winery and with the two Fjord mares Heide and Funa, 2 more horses are “trained”. Daniel works with his horses according to a special philosophy. They are trained not to turn over the entire soil with a horse plow but are taught to leave a flower strip to preserve biodiversity, create retreats for insects and thus stabilize the natural ecosystem of the vineyard.
