Vintage: 2019
Region: Tuscany, Italy
Viticulture: Organic
Grape varieties: 100% Sangiovese

Arnaldo Rossi Sella dell’Acuto Toscana Sangiovese is 100% Sangiovese from Arnaldo’s tiny vineyard plot on the crest of the ridge line between Corton and Castiglion Fiorentino (where Arnaldo lives).  The “Selle” means the saddle of the hilltop and the plot is high in elevation and has amazing exposure so the grapes are generously ripe and the soils are rich in calcareous clay.  Half the wine is aged in cement while the other half is aged in old barrels. Medium-bodied, earthy spice, black and red cherry, thyme and oregano, tomato leaf, with woody tannins. If you can only get one cuvee from Arnaldo, get some of this!

About Arnaldo Rossi

Arnaldo Rossi is the owner of Taverna Pane e Vino, a restaurant and B&B in the touristy village of Cortona. For 17 years, Arnaldo searched out and introduced the best natural wines in his small eatery. He has always believed that in order to be able to better judge somebody else’s work it is necessary to experience that job firsthand. Therefore,  Arnaldo decided to produce his own wines. He has a tiny plot that he farms with diligence, often using biodynamic preparations and simple hand tools.  I would describe the size of the vineyard as “garden size” – very small but handled with absolute care.  His passion for natural wine is deep, so the small amount of wines he makes are as pure as can be.  Sangiovese is at the heart of course, with Trebbiano, Malvasia, and the occasional other grapes like Malvasia Nera, Aleatico, etc. He uses a combination of old oak barrels, stainless steel, resin, and anfora for vinification and aging.  All the wines are made with natural fermentation and without sulfur additions when possible.
