About Anko Malbec Flor de Cardon

Anko Malbec Flor de Cardon is a tribute to the Cardon cactus growing in the vineyards. A wine with deep concentration and elegance.

Local legend holds that a young Indian princess tried to escape through the desert with her lover. The sharp thorns of the Cardon cactus scratched her. Her blood spilled on the spines, blossomed into beautiful white flowers. Anko Flor de Cardon Malbec takes its name from this fable. A rare and noble expression of Malbec from a vineyard at 6,000 feet above sea level in Salta, Argentina. Vineyard lots with the highest content of rocky surface stones show the most value. This profile causes much lower yields of Malbec fruit with exceptional concentration. The stony patches also lend a mineral texture to the wine and a finely grained tannin structure.

About Anko Winery

Anko means “high water” in the native Indian language of Salta. This region lies in the northwest corner of Argentina. Anko winemaker Jeff Mausbach says that Salta is a land of extremes. He loves the extreme beauty, extreme altitude, extreme sunlight. These extremes make for a singular expression of Malbec. Powerful, structured wines with a savory minerality. These are very different from other regions in Argentina. In this rugged, mountainous desert, an Anko is a high-altitude oasis. Ankos are a precious sanctuary, protection from the harsh elements of nature. The estate vineyards take their name from the area’s majestic cacti. These cacti can grow as tall as 30 feet. Indeed, this is an oasis amid the surrounding jagged landscape. The winemakers and co-owners are Jeff Mausbach and Alejandro “Colo” Sejanovich. The other co-owners are the Saavedra Azcona family.
