From the website: The 2013 VHR Cabernet displays perfumed aromatics of candied violets, salted caramel mocha, morello cherries, warm blackberries, dark chocolate, wild purple sage, clove, and cinnamon. Intensity and power converge with refined elegance and a lush, silky texture—mouth-filling with toast, French vanilla, and black fruit. There is depth and concentration here, with supple tannins, hints of minerality, and rich, dark soil. The wine finishes with incredible persistence, power, purity, and presence, showcasing the diversity in the seven blocks of Vine Hill Ranch.

More About This Wine
From the winery:
VHR Cabernet is an estate-grown wine of place, the culmination of the Phillips family’s evolution from grape-growing to winemaking over three generations. Years of traversing vineyard rows and caring for each of Vine Hill Ranch’s seven blocks have imbued a deep understanding of our estate vineyard’s unique characteristics.
To produce a true wine of place, we take a minimal touch approach to winemaking: harvesting at optimal ripeness, meticulous sorting of fruit, cold-soaking, extended maceration, use of native yeast, and new French oak barrels. Grapes from VHR’s selected blocks are vinified as separate lots to promote the full expression of the vineyard.
We are proud to be part of a long line of independent growers who have farmed in Oakville over the past century. In 1978, our parents, Alex and Robert (Bob) Phillips, moved to the Napa Valley to raise our family on the ranch that our grandfather, Bruce Kelham, had purchased some twenty years earlier and christened Vine Hill Ranch.
Over time, Bob and Alex cultivated a vineyard of renown, producing exceptional grapes for a collection of notable Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon vintners. Our parents also dedicated themselves to land preservation and community organizations, including the Farm Bureau and Napa Valley Grapegrowers (NVG), an association pivotal in defining the valley’s appellation structure and protecting its rich agriculture resources.
In 2011, we were honored with the Napa Valley Grower of the Year award, the first awarded to a family, rather than an individual. Bob and Alex’s love for Vine Hill Ranch is now shared by the third generation.
We feel profoundly blessed for our parents’ teaching the value of listening, learning and caring for land and community—and for cultivating in us the heart of a grape grower.
