Meet the Winemaker: Patrick Cappiello, Monte Rio Cellars Tasting

Join us for a tasting of handcrafted wines in the spirit of old California. Patrick Cappiello, co-founder and Winemaker at Monte Rio Cellars makes wines that focus on heritage and classic California varieties. Monte Rio Wines are made naturally with no additives and from grapes grown using organic practices. 

About Patrick Cappiello

Mr. Cappiello began working in restaurants. His wine career started in 2002 when he became a Sommelier at Tribeca Grill. Over the next 15 years, his role changed to Wine Director and restaurant owner. Where can you go from there? Winemaker, naturally! After meeting countless winemakers, in particular, after meeting his current business partner Pax Mahle, the transition to Winemaker was a logical next step. And so his winemaking career began in 2018 under the watchful eye of Pax Mahle.

Cappiello still serves as Wine Director of Walnut Street Café in Philadelphia. He is Food & Wine host for Playboy and a founding member of Winemakers & Sommeliers for California Wildfire Relief.
His 30 years of restaurant and Sommelier experience give him access to four of the world’s greatest wine cellars, TriBeCa Grill, Veritas, GILT, and Pearl & Ash. All of which are recipients of Wine Spectators’ “Grand Award.” Mr. Cappiello was named “Sommelier of the Year 2014” by Food & Wine Magazine, “Wine Person of the Year 2014” by Imbibe Magazine, and “Sommelier of the Year 2015” by Eater National.
